Gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.
~ GK Chesterton

2013 has been a big & beautiful year at Out of The Blue: milestones, victories, and burdens shared.

Cinematographer Jim Anderson and I joined Executive Producer Deborah Santana down in Washington, D.C. at the Smithsonian for a gala VIP screening October 29th of our award-winning documentary, SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS.

Leaders from the National Museum of African Art, National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage led the conversation about Kenya, culture, and the education of girls globally. Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole of the National Museum of African Art enthralled us with her words. Our film's narrator LaTanya Richardson Jackson introduced SOMD. The evening, a career and life highlight for us all.

Thank you, Deborah Santana, OOTB board member extraordinaire for your vision, dedication, and generosity. You and your Do A Little nonprofit help us to use our talents to help others and continue to thrive.

Screenings
Another first: screening our Daraja films at the elegantly restored Pelham Picture House in Westchester County. Thanks to all who came out! Fun on the stage in the Q&A with Daraja Academy founders Jenni & Jason Doherty.

SOMD has premiered at festivals around the country this year: Sarasota Film Festival's Through Women's Eyes, Women & Minorities in Media Fest at Towson University, and others. Gratitude to Michelle Materre for our world premiere at her Creatively Speaking series at HarlemMIST Theater. And deep thanks to Bradley Silver and his associate Amanda Gilgeours of Black Employees at Time Warner for a memorable, glamorous screening at Time Warner Center.

Thanks to Charles Hale and Artists Without Walls for your support and that generous filmmaker spotlight write-up!

Our appreciation to Al Jerome and his team at KCETLink for acquiring our titles A BROADWAY LULLABY, GIRLS OF DARAJA, and SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS this year for broadcast and streaming and partnering with the Women's Independent Film Festival in Los Angeles for the west coast premiere of SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS. Thanks, Jazz Smollett, for having SOMD & GIRLS OF DARAJA open your festival! And for the awards for Best Documentary, Best Concept, and Best Director.

Gratitude to the inimitable Terry Lawler for this year's New York Women In Film & Television screening of our titles A BROADWAY LULLABY and SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS. I'm honored to have been chosen for the Fall 2013 round of interviewees for NYWIFT's prestigious Archive Project: women making 'significant contributions' in film, TV, and digital media telling their stories for herstory. : )

Love appearing in those on-air roundtable discussions on independent filmmaking for the CUNY-TV show, Incredible Indies. Thanks to Gail Yancosek, Susan Iger and their crew at CUNY. December's upcoming show features clips & conversation on our award-winning film IN GOOD CONSCIENCE, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2014!

Our films are changing lives for the better. Please make your tax-deductible donation here now. Some people think that a small donation doesn't mean much--- IT DOES. $10, $25, $50 $100 Whatever you choose to share is appreciated, welcomed, and very much needed!! As a nonprofit organization, every single dollar matters.

So much good news to share this year: PLEASE HELP US CONTINUE!!

This & That
Our ongoing thanks to our OOB team including Jim Anderson, Julia Wrona, Elizabeth Benson, all our board members, and Mary Catherine Bunting for making so much possible for us. Gratitude to Ruth Ann Harnisch of The Harnisch Foundation for her unexpected donation this year.

We leave you with an unforgettable moment with the Daraja girls in Kenya, the first rain after a very long drought. My essay 'Daraja Rain' appears in the current issue of Works & Days,
a gorgeous quarterly that is gaining a lot of creative attention. Thank you, Cara Sheffler.

Looking forward to 2014 !!!

In gratitude,

Sky
